mac.com email issues resolved

For the past week or so, we’ve been having difficulty delivering email to mac.com. We were able to resolve those issues today and all mail is now flowing freely.

At 10:37am Pacific time, an upstream network peer experienced a problem on their network. The explanation we’ve received so far is as follows: “A router in Salt Lake City dropped its routing tables, which caused a router in Chicago to lose several BGP sessions.”
This network problem would have been identified primarily by east coast customers as a 30 second to 1 minute outage as certain upstream connections failed over. By 10:42am, Network issues with this particular vendor appeared to stabilize and there have been no further events of this nature today.
This even was another example of our meshed network operating as designed to keep our network online in the event of an outage outside our control. We’re only posting here as we’ve received a few questions about caused the problem.
As we receive more information from our network vendors, we will update this ticket.
Maintenance Window - 02/07/2008

During our traditional maintenance window hours from 11pm to 3am on February 7th, we will be making the following updates in our data center:
- We will be upgrading PHP 5 on box6 to the latest 5.2 release.
- We will be restarting fw02.tkwl01. This is a redundant system and no customers should see an outage as a result of this.
- We will be completing some cable clean up from our data center migration. This will require a few machines be shut down and their power cables moved. Owners of those machines have been notified directly.
- We will be restarting two distribution switches resulting in a 30 second downtime for a number of machines.

Update 02/08 12:05am – Our PHP upgrade on box6 has been completed.
Update 02/08 12:38am – fw02.tkwl01 has been rebooted.
Update 02/08 2:06am – We’re beginning the machine reboots now.
Update 02/08 3:10am – All machine and switch updates have been completed.
